About product

F-4B Phantom, double-sided painting mask 1:48 (Art Scale)

A set of pre-cut painting masks for the F-4B Phantom II model in 1:48 scale. The masks serve for covering the glazing while spraying, so that the framing of both cockpits comes out sharp and equally wide. It is not a kit or a finished model but an accessory for painting. The double-sided version means that the sheet contains parts for the outer and the inner side of the glazing, and on a two-seat aircraft with a clearly visible cockpit that shows. The masks are cut for the Tamiya kit.

Applying and spraying

Degrease the clear part and let it dry completely. Take the mask out of the sheet with a scalpel, lay it on the frame and press it down with a toothpick all around the perimeter. Where a mask overhangs the edge of the part, trim it with a fresh blade along the outline. Cover the rest of the model with tape or liquid mask. Spray thin coats with short pauses; a single heavy coat will flow under the edge and the line will fray. Lift the mask as soon as the paint is dry to the touch, pulling it at an angle rather than straight up. With a double-sided set, spray the inner side in the interior shade first and only then the outer frames in the covering color.

The real subject

The McDonnell F-4B Phantom II was a two-seat twin-engine carrier fighter of the US Navy, powered by J79 turbojets. It served as an interceptor and multi-role machine and its design became the basis for a whole range of further versions. Both sliding canopies have prominent, fairly wide frames, and with the cockpit slid open their inner side is clearly visible.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the F-4B model in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who want sharp framing on both cockpits
  • Builds with the canopies slid back and the interior fitted
  • Anyone who wants to avoid trimming tape

The mask is an accessory, not a kit. The model, paints, glue and thinners are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is only a set of painting masks; the kit has to be bought separately.

On a two-seat cockpit with the canopies slid back the inner sides of the frames are clearly visible. A double-sided set makes it possible to spray them in the interior shade.

Press the edge of the mask down carefully, spray several thin coats and lift the mask as soon as the paint is dry to the touch.

No. The shapes are cut for a particular kit, so they need not seat precisely on another model of the same type.
