Resin exhaust nozzles in 1:48 scale for the Phantom II variants designated F-4E, F-4EJ, F-4J and F-4S. It is a detail accessory, not a kit: the castings replace the plastic nozzles from the base model.
The exhaust section of the engine is one of the first places on a model of a fighter that a person looks at. Injection-molded plastic runs into its limits here: the wall of the nozzle has to be thin, the petals should have sharp edges and the interior tends to be split by a seam that is hard to sand. A resin casting is poured as a whole or in a few parts, so the seam inside the duct falls away and the edges stay sharp.
Wash the castings with detergent and cut the casting block off so that the outline of the trailing edge is kept – it is the hardest to sand back. Sand wet and with protection for your airways. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). The nozzles are rewarding for metallic shades: spray a gloss black base, over it a thin coat of metallic paint, and then play the individual petals out in shades of burnt steel, so that the surface does not read as uniform. A dried surface takes a fine graphite breath applied dry. Glue the nozzles on at the end of the build, so that they are not damaged while handling it.
The set is an accessory for a kit, not a model in its own right. It is supplied unpainted, and paints and glue are not included in the package.
