This is a set of photo-etched parts from the Czech maker Eduard, meant for detailing a model of the F-4J Phantom II aircraft in 1:48 scale. To avoid confusion: it is not an aircraft kit and it is not a masking set. A masking set for the same machine exists under a matching name, but this item belongs among the photo-etched parts, that is thin metal sheets that are cut out of a fret and glued onto a plastic model. Photo-etched parts handle exactly those elements that injection-molded plastic cannot make thin enough in 1:48 scale: instrument panels, consoles, levers, seat belts or small covers.
The McDonnell Douglas F-4J Phantom II was a version of the two-seat twin-engined carrier-borne fighter aircraft operated by the US Navy and Marine Corps. Compared with the earlier variants it received more powerful engines, a modified radar and fire control system and further changes for operation from aircraft carriers. The Phantom was large, powerful and unmistakable for its angled outer wing panels and the anhedral tail surfaces. Both cockpits are clearly visible on a model in 1:48 scale, and that is where detailing shows most.
Cut the photo-etched parts out on a hard surface with a sharp scalpel, not with sprue cutters, or the sheet will bend. Make the bends in an etch bender or between two blades, so that the edge is straight. They are glued with super glue applied with the tip of a toothpick or a wire; a drop straight from the bottle will flood the detail. If the parts are colored, do not overspray them needlessly and only knock them back gently with a matte coat at the end. Before you start gluing, sand the corresponding molded detail away in the plastic, otherwise the photo-etched part will not sit flush.
The set is an accessory for a kit. It does not hold an aircraft model, paints or glue.
