A set of cut masks for the glazing of the tailless naval F4D-1 Skyray interceptor in 1:48 scale. The outer and the inner surface of the cockpit are dealt with and the shapes match the kit by the brand Tamiya.
Responsibility details are not available.
Douglas's Skyray is among the strangest machines ever to serve on American aircraft carriers. It has no horizontal tail surface; the whole job is done by a broad wing shaped like a bat's with rounded tips. The design came out of German wartime studies of tailless aircraft and the result was an interceptor that could get to altitude faster than anything then flying. In 1958 it collected five climb records and it was the only naval type to serve in the order of battle of continental air defense as well.
On this aircraft the cockpit is set low into the fuselage and the canopy blends into the leading edge of the spine. The windscreen has three faces and the sliding section is smooth and free of frames. It looks like an easy task, but it is exactly on smooth glass that every uneven edge of paint is spotted at once, because nothing distracts from it.
The package deals with both sides of the glazing. The inner pieces make it possible to color the frames from within, which on a low-set cockpit adds a great deal to the impression of depth. The shapes are derived straight from the parts of the chosen kit, so cutting out to a paper template is avoided and with it the risk of asymmetrical frames.
It is best to degrease the glass before work and let it dry completely. The film holds by itself, light pressure is enough, and a fingernail or a wooden toothpick will serve better than metal tweezers, which easily dig into a clear part. Rather more thin coats of paint are applied, because a heavy coat creeps under the edge of the covering.
