This item is not a kit of the aircraft but an accessory for one: 3D-printed resin gun bays for a model of the Grumman F4F-4 Wildcat carrier fighter in 1:48 scale. Open wing panels are among the rewarding modeling effects: the model stops being just a shape and starts telling the story of what happened to the aircraft between flights. Printing manages interior structure that an injection mold could not create.
The F4F-4 was the Wildcat variant with folding wings for carrier operations and with six 12.7 mm machine guns in the wing, that is two more than the earlier versions. It is precisely the arrangement of the armament in the wing that makes this version a logical candidate for a gun bay set: there is something to show and there is plenty of it. Maintaining the armament and replenishing ammunition were also everyday scenes on the deck of a carrier, so open panels make sense in a diorama too.
Wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water, then cut off the print supports and level the surfaces. An opening usually has to be cut into the wing of the kit: work slowly, guide the knife along the engraved lines and try the fit dry before you start gluing. They are glued with super glue. Paint and weather the inside of the bay before closing it up: a base coat, a wash in the recesses, fine traces of oil and rubbing around the panels. The panels can be propped open, but then make sure the interior seats without a gap.
The accessory is supplied unpainted. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
