A resin accessory set for builders of German night fighter aircraft in 1:48 scale. The antenna array of the radar is an absolutely defining feature of the silhouette of these machines, and plastic kits usually handle it with thick parts that bear no relation to the scale. The casting holds a thinner profile and a sharper shape. The set does not replace the kit, it only adds the equipment on the nose.
The FuG 218, known under the code name Neptun, was an airborne radar for finding targets at night, fielded in the closing stages of the Second World War. It operated at metric wavelengths, which meant fairly large dipole antennas carried on booms ahead of the nose of the aircraft - the array was nicknamed the antlers for its shape. Twin-engine night fighters carried it, as did two-seat trainer and combat versions of jet types. Aerodynamically it was a noticeable brake, but without the radar a night interception was practically a matter of chance.
Wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent to free them of mold release agent. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw a short distance from the part and sand the mark away carefully - do not breathe in the resin dust, sand wet and ventilate. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). The antennas are thin and brittle, so fit them right at the very end of the build, after varnishing and the decals. The attachment tends to be more reliable if you pre-drill shallow holes in the nose with a micro drill and sink the booms into them. Watch the symmetry: the array gives itself away at first glance when one antenna sits at a different angle from the other. Apply a primer before painting, then the dipoles in the matte color of the airframe, and leave the tips in a metal shade.
