It also works well as a frame into which the model is placed, because the viewer's eye then naturally travels to the main subject of the scene.
Clean and degrease the part before painting, so that the paint holds. Lay down a dark base and only then drag a lighter shade over it dry, which brings the relief up. A metal structure looks believable with a hint of rust in the places where water would collect, while on brickwork a light dusting of pigment at the foot helps. Seat the gate in the terrain so that it does not merely stand on the surface but sinks slightly into it. A few blades of grass or some grit at the foot will hide the joint reliably.
