About product

Gloster Gladiator Mk.II - plastic kit from Roden, 1:48 scale

An injection-molded plastic kit of the British fighter biplane Gloster Gladiator Mk.II in 1:48 scale from the Ukrainian brand Roden. The model captures the last British production biplane fighter, with an enclosed cockpit and a finely engraved surface. As with biplanes generally, rigging is part of the build. The exact contents of the box and the decal schemes are given in the instructions inside.

The real subject

The Gloster Gladiator was the last British biplane fighter taken into service and it represented both the peak and the twilight of that design era. It came in during the second half of the 1930s and, compared with older biplanes, it had an enclosed cockpit, a more powerful radial engine and machine gun armament. The Mk.II version received a stronger engine and further changes. Although it was already obsolete when the Second World War broke out, it fought on a number of fronts - it became famous above all for the tenacious defense of Malta and for service in Scandinavia and over the Mediterranean, where a number of foreign air forces flew it too. It was also in service with other countries of northern Europe.

Building and painting tips

Finish and paint the cockpit before closing the fuselage; fit the enclosed canopy after varnishing and mask the framing. Seat the lower wing first, and the upper one into its struts with a temporary support. Stretch the rigging after the main painting, with fine thread or elastic filament. Bring the engraved covering to life with a fine wash and shading; pick out the radial engine and the exhausts with a dry brush. If you are building the winter version, count on skis instead of wheels.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of British fighters of the turn of the 1930s and 1940s.
  • For fans of the last biplane fighters and of the defense of Malta.
  • For modelers who want to try rigging a biplane.
  • For more advanced builders with a taste for interwar aircraft.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
