A cast miniature of the Gnome Omega engine for 1:48. The pioneering rotary seven-cylinder of 1909, with which Farmans, Blériots and Voisins flew, faithfully captured down to the fine valve gear and the hub section.
Responsibility details are not available.
The brothers Laurent and Louis Seguin showed the Gnome Omega in 1909 and aviation moved on with it. The cylinders turned together with the propeller around a standing shaft, which solved the cooling without a single liter of water, and fifty horses at a weight of barely eighty kilograms was an unheard-of figure for the time. The Omega became the first rotary engine produced in large series, and a whole family of later Gnome and Le Rhone types, as well as the license-built German Oberursels, grew out of it.
The shape is transferred into resin with the stress on what is most visible on prewar aircraft: the engine then hung practically naked in a lattice structure, so nothing on it stays hidden. The casting carries the sharp edges of the cooling fins, the run of the intake pipes and the seating flange of the propeller hub.
Cut resin with a fine-toothed saw and work at an extraction unit or at least outside a living room. Level the unevenness left by the sprue gate with a sanding sponge, rinse the parts and let them dry thoroughly. When painting, it helps to bring out the structure with a dark enamel wash, which runs between the fins and separates them visually.
The set is aimed at modelers who build aircraft from the beginning of the last century or pioneering racing specials in the ordinary aviation scale. It will serve well as an object in its own right in a display case too, because a rotary engine is a fine technical artifact all by itself.
