About product

Omask 1:48 Gotha Go 242B, masks for national insignia and code letters

This is a masking set, not a kit. It contains self-adhesive masks cut to the shape of the national insignia and the code letters for a model of the Gotha Go 242B transport glider in 1:48 scale. With it the insignia are applied to the model in paint, so no carrier film and no visible decal edge appear on the surface. The masks are cut to measure for the parts of the particular ICM 48225 kit, so before you buy, check that you are building exactly that one.

What the set is for

The Gotha Go 242 is a transport glider with a high wing, a load-carrying fuselage and tail surfaces carried on a twin-boom layout. Its large flat areas of fuselage and wing mean large national insignia in 1:48 scale, and that is exactly where decals most often fail. A large decal is harder to seat, on a matte base it tends to silver and its edge is often still visible after a clear coat. Spraying through a mask gets round that problem, as the insignia is part of the paint layer and the surface stays uniform.

Usage tips

Let the base cure thoroughly, because fresh paint will come away with the mask. Seat the mask precisely and press the edges down carefully with a fingernail or a toothpick so that paint cannot creep under them. Spray the paint in several very thin coats and from a perpendicular direction rather than at an angle under the edge of the mask. A heavy coat creates a step once the mask is removed, which then has to be sanded down. Remove the mask as soon as the paint has set, not after it has fully cured, and peel it slowly back on itself rather than straight up. With multi-part masks work layer by layer and let the paint dry between them. At the end even the whole surface out with the clear coat of your choice.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want to spray the insignia and codes and avoid the silvering of large decals.
  • Builders who work with pronounced weathering on a model, under which a decal edge would be a nuisance.
  • More experienced modelers, because spraying through a mask calls for precise seating and thin coats.

This is a masking set for a model, not a kit. The model, paints and clear coats are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

They are not. They are self-adhesive masks. The insignia is sprayed onto the model through them in paint, so no carrier film and no visible decal edge stay on the surface.

The masks are cut to measure for the parts of the particular ICM 48225 kit. With another kit, check the shape and dimensions of the parts beforehand.

As soon as the paint has set, not after it has fully cured. Peel it slowly back on itself rather than straight up, otherwise the finish risks tearing.

You applied too heavy a coat of paint. Spray in several very thin coats perpendicular to the surface rather than at an angle under the edge of the mask.
