Test and evaluation aircraft do not get much space among models, and yet they are exactly the ones that carry the most striking finishes. So that a machine is clearly visible against the sky and on film during measurement, its surfaces are painted in a bold color and photogrammetry markings are added. The six machines on this sheet belong precisely to that category.
Three aircraft are the older A-6A version and carry the numbers 151784, 152642 and 157014. The remaining three are the modernized A-6E version with the numbers 159567 and 156926, with the number 159567 appearing twice. First in the ordinary test finish, then in the low-visibility form the US Navy introduced in the 1980s.
That pair is the most valuable thing on the sheet. On a single fuselage number you can see the move from colorful markings to gray outline national insignia, that is the change that within a few years transformed the appearance of the whole of American naval aviation. A modeler can build two models of the same machine and stand them side by side.
A pair of finishes on one fuselage number is also useful for anyone who wants to try both painting techniques. The colorful version tests the crispness of the edges and the cleanness of the transitions, while the low-visibility one tests the ability to grade close grays so that the panels stay legible on the model.
The individual machines are assigned to establishments that were renamed over the years, so the sheet sets older and newer names of the same institution side by side. One aircraft belonged to an evaluation squadron, the others to test centers. The package contains the decals alone; neither plastic parts nor paints belong with it.
