About product

STEEL seat belts for the Grumman EA-6B Prowler 1:48

This set holds just one thing, but in the best possible form: photo-etched seat belts for an aircraft cockpit. The STEEL designation means that the carrier material is steel instead of the usual brass. Steel photo-etch is more springy and, above all, holds its shape once bent, so a belt can convincingly be draped over the edge of a seat or left hanging loose without straightening itself out. The surface is color-printed including the buckles, so the laborious painting of small hardware is no longer needed. The manufacturer is the Czech firm Eduard.

The real subject

The Grumman EA-6B Prowler was an American carrier-borne electronic warfare aircraft derived from the A-6 Intruder bomber. Unlike its two-seat predecessor it had a lengthened forward fuselage with a crew of a pilot and the operators of the jamming systems, which makes the cockpit an unusually extensive and clearly visible space. That is precisely why on a Prowler model it pays to invest more in the seats than elsewhere — with the canopies open, everything is visible.

How the belts are fitted

First cut the parts off with a sharp knife or photo-etch nippers, and never break them out. Make the folds gradually and in small steps; steel takes more than brass, but a sharp break in the printed area can damage it. Glue the belts with super glue in the smallest of amounts, or with a glue for photo-etch; thinned cement for plastic does not hold on metal. A rewarding trick is to let the end of a belt hang loose over the side of the seat or over the frame — only an irregular, slightly wavy run of the belt looks genuine. To match it to the interior, it is a good idea to weather the belt lightly at the end with a dark wash.

Who the belts are for

  • Modelers who build the Prowler with the cockpit open
  • Those who already have the interior finished and want to add only the belts
  • Builders who are not satisfied with belts molded in plastic or printed on a decal
  • Beginners with photo-etch — the set has few parts and the assembly is straightforward

It is an accessory for a model, not a kit in its own right. The base model, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

That the photo-etch is made of steel instead of brass. A steel belt is more springy and holds its shape once bent, so it can convincingly drape over a seat.

No. This item is the seat belts on their own. At Eduard a complete interior is handled by the full photo-etched set or the narrowed Zoom line.

With super glue in the smallest of amounts or with a glue meant for photo-etch. Ordinary cement for plastic does not hold on metal.

Belts are not tied to the shape of particular plastic parts as strictly as an instrument panel, so they tend to be usable more widely. Check the scale of your model before buying, though.
