Masking films for the glazing of the last naval biplane fighter, the F3F-1, in 1:48 scale. The covering is cut for the outer and the inner sides and matches the kit by the brand Accurate Miniatures.
Responsibility details are not available.
The F3F type closed the era of combat machines with two flying surfaces in the US Navy. It looks like a late echo of the 1920s, but it hides two things that foreshadowed the future: retractable landing gear whose wheels disappear into the sides of the stubby fuselage, and that strong, barrel-shaped shell itself. Its successor with a four in the designation borrowed both from it. The version with a one at the end served with carrier and Marine squadrons from the middle of the 1930s and lasted in the front line until 1941.
The cockpit is closed by a sliding cover, which on a biplane of that time was not the rule. The glazed area is not large, but it is surrounded by a forest of struts, braces and wires that complicate masking terribly. Trimming tape by hand here means working with tweezers in a space smaller than a fingernail.
The parts included deal with the outside and the opposing inner surfaces. On such a small cover, coloring the frame from inside shows clearly, because the cockpit is visible from the side and from above. The shapes come from the molding of the kit concerned and do not have to be reduced in any way.
Work with good light and sharp tweezers with fine jaws. A small piece is better laid on the surface only lightly first, its position checked against the light, and pressed down only once it fits. Moving it repeatedly reduces the tack quickly. Anyone who wants to make the work easier can set the order of the pieces out in advance on a piece of white paper.
