The real subject

The British steel helmet Mk I is a flat helmet with a wide brim around its circumference, which the British army introduced during the First World War and wore in a slightly modified form during the Second World War as well. The units of the Commonwealth countries wore it too. Depending on the situation the chin strap was fastened under the chin, or pulled up over the edge of the helmet, and it is precisely such small things that give a figure on a diorama life.

Building and painting tips

In this scale the parts are very small, so work with tweezers and over a surface with a raised edge. Cut the excess material off with a sharp blade a little away from the part and sand the remainder down, taking care not to sand the strap away. The neck usually needs adapting to the opening in the collar of the figure. Wash and degrease the parts before painting. The strap stands out when you underline it with a shade darker than the surface of the helmet.
