What it is good for

Sprayed markings behave like the rest of the finish: they go matte in the same way, they rub in the same way and they take washes and pigments in the same way. On a model that is meant to look used that is a substantial difference, because a decal stays an alien layer even after matting, one that weathering cannot fully even out.

Tips for use, taking the mask off at the right moment

Most of the work is spoiled right at the end, when the templates are removed. Do not wait until the paint has cured completely, because the best moment is when the coat has set matte to the touch, that is, usually a few dozen minutes after the last pass. A fully cured layer breaks at the edge and tears away with the mask, while fresh paint smears instead. Take the mask off with tweezers, pulling it sharply back over itself rather than straight upward, because a perpendicular pull lifts the paint under the edge as well. With larger templates, help yourself by warming them slightly with warm air, which softens the adhesive. If a small unsprayed edge does appear after all, repair it with a brush while the boundary is still fresh.
