A masking set from MH models in 1:48 scale for a model of the twin-engine Heinkel He 115 floatplane. These are templates for covering the glazing, not a kit and not accessory parts. The masks are stuck onto the clear part, the remaining area is masked and the cockpit frames are then sprayed in one step together with the rest of the airframe. That does away with going around the frames with a brush by hand, including the nerves it costs on long glazed areas.
The He 115 was a German twin-engine floatplane with two BMW 132 radial engines, used for reconnaissance, minelaying and torpedo attacks. It is marked by extensive glazing of the front of the fuselage and a long canopy with a great many frames, which is exactly the case where a masking set pays off the most. A model with two floats is moreover awkward to hold during handwork, so every step that shortens the handling of a finished part counts.
First wash and degrease the clear part so that the mask holds. Transfer the template with tweezers, seat it precisely in the corner of the frame and press it down with a soft stick or a toothpick all around the outline; an edge that has not seated is the most common cause of paint creeping under. Cover the inside of the cockpit with a piece of foam or with masking putty. Spray the interior color first, then the base shade of the camouflage, always in thin coats. Remove the mask shortly after it is dry with the tip of a scalpel, so that you do not pull on the paint. Any overspray is carefully scraped off with a wooden toothpick, which does not scratch the clear plastic.
