Machines operating in North Africa carried a camouflage scheme different from the aircraft in Europe, because desert shades prevailed instead of the European greens. On such a base a national insignia looks different from the way it does on dark camouflage, and working with a mask has its own particulars too. The form of the insignia differed on these machines.
Desert shades are normally sprayed to a matte finish, and a matte surface is the worst base for masking there can be. A microscopically rough layer will not let a mask seal perfectly on the one hand, and on the other it draws paint under the edge by capillary action, so that even a thin coat creates a blurred edge. The solution is always the same: before applying the masks, cover the area with a thin coat of gloss varnish. It smooths the surface, the mask seals on it and the insignia comes out with a sharp edge. Leave the matting for the very end, after all the templates have been removed. Apply the dust and pigments typical of a desert setting at the end as well, because under a mask they would be baked in and a visible outline would be left once it was taken off.
