About product

Hurricane Mk.I ejector-type exhausts in 1:48 scale from CMK

This is not an aircraft kit but a resin accessory. The set replaces the exhaust stacks of an injection-molded Hurricane model in 1:48 scale with castings whose outlets are rendered considerably more cleanly than a split plastic mold allows. Exhausts are always clearly visible on a model and are among the elements where a small improvement tells the most. The set is cut for the Airfix kit.

The real subject

The Hawker Hurricane Mk.I was a British single-engine fighter of mixed construction: a tubular fuselage frame covered with fabric and metal, and a thick wing profile. It was precisely the mixed construction that made field repairs easier. The Rolls-Royce Merlin engine was fitted with various types of exhaust system on machines of this generation. The ejector arrangement, in which the individual cylinders are led into separate stacks pointing rearward, used the energy of the exhaust gases for a slight gain in thrust and replaced the older layout with a collector manifold. The shape of the exhausts is therefore one of the clues to identifying the production batch of a particular machine.

Usage and painting tips

Wash the castings in lukewarm soapy water and let them dry. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw and level the mating surface so that the exhausts sit recessed in the side of the cowling at the correct angle. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue. Pure silver and rust do not work in terms of color: start with a dark brown base, add shades toward red-brown and rusty yellow and put sooty black on the mouths of the stacks. The best effect comes from pigments applied dry with a soft brush. Glue the exhausts on only after the cowling has been sprayed, otherwise you will damage them while masking.

Who the set is for

  • builders of British fighters of the beginning of the Second World War in 1:48
  • modelers who want the correct type of exhaust for a particular batch
  • anyone interested in realistic painting of worn metal parts
  • modelers working with resin and cyanoacrylate glue

This is an accessory for modelers, not a kit in its own right. The basic model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The ejector arrangement leads the cylinders into separate stacks pointing rearward and uses the energy of the gases for a slight gain in thrust. The older layout used a collector manifold.

The rendering of the mouths is not stated here and we will not claim it. If the casting is solid, the mouth can be carefully suggested with a fine drill or with dark paint.

Avoid silver. Build the color on a dark brown base, add rusty shades and darken the mouths with sooty black, ideally with pigment applied dry.
