The Polikarpov I-16 type 5 in 1:48 scale from Clear Prop Models: a plastic kit of the Soviet fighter in its early form, as it appeared in the sky over Spain.
Responsibility details are not available.
An injection-molded plastic kit of the Soviet Polikarpov I-16 type 5 fighter in 1:48 scale. The boxing is focused on the machines deployed in Spain, and specifically in the early form of the production series. A companion set from the same maker covers the late form; if you are building a particular machine, go by that very distinction in the name.
The I-16 was a breakthrough in its day: a cantilever low-wing monoplane with retractable landing gear and an enclosed cockpit at a time when most fighters in the world still flew as biplanes with fixed wheels. The type 5 was powered by the M-25 radial engine, a licensed development branch of the American Wright Cyclone, and carried two machine guns in the wing. The fuselage was a wooden monocoque and the wing metal, a combination that gave the aircraft low weight and legendary agility, but also demanding flying qualities. In Spain the machine earned two nicknames: the Republicans called it the Mosca, their opponents the Rata.
A short fuselage and a large engine cowling mean that the axis is easily thrown out; dry-fit both the cowling and the engine. The top of the fuselage is wooden, so a smoother, more glossily sealed surface will look natural on it than on the metal wing. Coat the surfaces with a gloss varnish before the decals and take the sheen down once dry. Spanish schemes tend to be markedly worn by dust and sun, so working with filters and fine toning of the surfaces pays off.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
