An injection-molded plastic kit of the Soviet Polikarpov I-16 type 5 fighter in 1:48 scale. The boxing is devoted to the machines deployed over Spain, and specifically in the late form of the production series. The maker has a separate item for the early form, so when choosing, go directly by the distinction in the name.
The I-16 was among the boldest designs of the mid-1930s. It was a cantilever low-wing monoplane with retractable landing gear and a short, barrel-shaped fuselage at a time when the fighter arms of most countries were only just leaving biplanes behind. The type 5 was powered by the M-25 radial engine, a licensed development branch of the American Wright Cyclone, and the armament consisted of machine guns in the wing. The monocoque fuselage was wooden and the wing metal. The aircraft was exceptionally agile, but at the same time it did not tolerate inattention on landing. Over Spain it earned the nicknames Mosca among the Republicans and Rata among their opponents.
Dry-fit the engine cowling and the front of the fuselage, or the longitudinal axis is easily thrown out. The wooden fuselage and the metal wing can be set apart in color as well: a smoother, more uniform surface on top against finely suggested panels on the wing. Coat the surfaces under the decals with a gloss varnish first and take the sheen down once dry. Spanish schemes tend to be marked by dust and sun, so it pays to work with filters and fine lightening of the surfaces rather than with a hard wash.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
