A set of cut masks for the glazing of the single-seat version of the Soviet Ilyushin Il-2 ground-attack aircraft in 1:48, with shapes for both sides of the glass. It relates to the Accurate Miniatures kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
Ilyushin's ground-attack aircraft was not armored in the sense that the designers bolted armor plates onto it. The forward part of the fuselage formed a single shell of armor steel inside which the engine, the radiators, the fuel and the pilot sat, and this shell carried the loads of the whole structure at the same time. There were around 700 kilograms of steel in it, and it was thanks to it that the machines came back from attacks on ground targets shot through but still airworthy.
The original two-seat design was simplified on request to a single-seater so that the aircraft would gain in range and performance. The fighting of 1941 and 1942 showed how costly that decision was: an unprotected rear hemisphere made the ground-attack machine an easy target for fighters and losses ran into the thousands. The rear gunner returned to the machine at the end of 1942. Over 30000 were built in all, which is the highest number for any combat aircraft.
The front pane on this type is unusually thick and on a model it is usually carried by a separate clear part. A narrow metal frame runs around it, and it is very hard to mask by hand, because it has not a single right-angled edge. A shape cut in advance solves that difficulty, and the rest of the cockpit is then only a matter of patiently pressing the film down around its perimeter.
