This accessory is neither a base nor a model of a machine, but a dividing part for a scene: a gate with an adjoining fence of the kind found around town villas, cemeteries, barracks yards and factory compounds. It brings a vertical line into the diorama that gives the setting depth and separates the space in front of the enclosure from the space behind it.
An enclosure is one of the most effective ways of leading the viewer's eye. Set across the area it divides the action into two planes; run along the edge it closes the composition and stops the setting from visually spilling off the groundwork. The gate adds a natural point of entry to that, a place where a figure or a vehicle can logically be put.
Before painting it pays to degrease the surface and let it dry thoroughly, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth areas. A thin coat of primer is better than one heavy one, because the fine grilles are easily flooded. Wrought parts look convincing in a dark, slightly uneven black with a hint of corrosion at the foot of the posts; go easy on the gloss, a matte surface reads as metal. Once you sink the enclosure into the groundwork and add a tuft of grass or some dust at its foot, the impression that it is merely standing on a board disappears.
