A set of Dead Design masks for the cockpit frames of the Japanese interceptor Mitsubishi J2M3 Raiden in 1:48 scale.
The Raiden, that is thunder and lightning, was the exact opposite of the agile Zero. The navy wanted it as a fast-climbing interceptor against bombers, not as an agile rival in a dogfight. The engine sits some way behind the propeller and an extension shaft connects it to it, so the nose is pointed and a cooling fan works under the cowling. The J2M3 version carried four 20 mm cannons and was committed mainly to the defense of Japanese cities.
The Raiden struggled with the field of view from the cockpit from the start and the shape of the windscreen changed during production. The frames therefore run across a markedly convex surface and have uneven spacing. On such a small area lining in with a brush hardly ever works and any overrun is visible against the light through the whole canopy.
Degrease the glazing, seat the mask exactly and press it home in the curves with a toothpick. Spray lightly and rather more than once, so that the paint does not creep under where the glass is most curved. Lift the mask with tweezers along the edge of the frame and look straight away to see whether a ragged edge has been left anywhere.
