A kit of the two-seat trainer JJ-7 in 1:48 scale from Trumpeter. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. 1:48 is a rewarding scale for jet trainers, because it lets the pair of cockpits and the shape of the fuselage show, while the finished model does not take up an unreasonable amount of room in the display case.
The JJ-7 is the two-seat trainer version derived from the Chinese J-7 fighter family, which in turn is based on the design of the MiG-21. Its characteristic features are the delta wing, the circular nose intake with a shock cone and, on the trainer version, a lengthened forward fuselage with a second cockpit. The machine is used to convert pilots onto supersonic types and for advanced training; in export form it appears under the designation FT-7 and several foreign users operate it. Thanks to its common origin with the MiG-21 this subject is also of interest to collectors who build the whole family of derived types.
First dry fit the fuselage halves and check the cockpits; on two-seat machines the interior of both seats is visible, so work on them pays off. Glue the plastic with liquid cement for polystyrene and sand the seams on the fuselage and the intake carefully, because they are clearly visible on the finished model. Mask the glazing and fit it only after spraying. Spray the metal areas around the nozzle in a shade that resists rubbing and set them off from the rest of the airframe. Apply the decals onto a gloss coat, then unify the finish with a matte or semi-gloss coat. Keep the weathering restrained; training aircraft tend to be well kept.
