The Kawasaki T-4 is a two-seat subsonic trainer that the Japan Air Self-Defense Force took into service at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s as a replacement for older types. It has a high-set swept wing, a tandem cockpit under a single canopy and is powered by a pair of small turbofan engines of domestic design. It is precisely the twin-engine arrangement that is characteristic of this type and sets it apart from single-engine trainers of a similar size. Shortly after its introduction the T-4 was also taken over by the Blue Impulse display team, which flies it to this day and changes its anniversary and seasonal markings.
The Blue Impulse scheme rests on the contrast of white and blue, so preparing the surface is crucial. Use a primer and lay the finish on in thin coats, ideally from the light color to the dark. The division between the colors is dealt with by good masking tape, and go over the edge first with the light color, so that the dark one does not creep under it. Finish the cockpit before closing the fuselage and mask the canopy. Seat the extensive decals onto a gloss intermediate coat and use a product to soften them. Choose restrained weathering, as display team aircraft are kept in clean condition.
