Responsibility details are not available.
Masks for a model of the Japanese interceptor Nakajima Ki-44. The name gives that the masking reckons with the outer as well as the inner side, so the color of the frame can be resolved from both views at once. The set complements a Shoki kit at the painting stage and does not form a model on its own. It differs from the sister sets in not dealing with the national insignia, which the manufacturer offers separately.
The Shoki was built on a single idea: get up high fast and attack. Nakajima therefore gave it small wings and a massive radial engine, whose cowling makes up almost half the outline of the fuselage seen from the side. The performance was paid for with a high wing loading, because of which the machine did not forgive mistakes on landing and did not suit a turning fight. Against raids by high-flying bombers, however, it was one of the few Japanese answers that made sense.
The cockpit of the Shoki is edged by a prominent frame that is hard to imitate by cutting tape by hand, and that is exactly why ready-made masking is useful. Deal with the inner side before you seat the part on the fuselage. After spraying the outside, uncover slowly and at a shallow angle. If paint has run in somewhere, remove it with a toothpick sharpened to a wedge, not with metal.
