1:48 Ki-46 III Dinah is a set of masks from the Dead Design brand cut for the reconnaissance form of the fast Mitsubishi Ki-46-III in 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The set belongs to the reconnaissance form of the Ki-46-III, that is, the one that kept the smooth streamlined nose. The masks serve to cover the surfaces that are to stay free of paint during spraying, and they save work exactly where painting by hand works least well.
The Ki-46 was among the most elegant machines of the Second World War and its shape was not for its own sake: high speed was its only defense, because it carried a minimum of armament itself. The Mk III version went further still in this respect: it received more powerful engines, a greater fuel capacity and above all a new, stepless forward canopy in which the windscreen ran smoothly into the outline of the fuselage without the usual break. The crew consisted of two men sitting in separate cockpits far apart.
That smooth nose is the most demanding place on the whole machine for a modeler. The framing on it runs across a surface curved in two axes, so a straight mask cannot cover it without careful seating and pressing down along its whole length. Work from the narrowest place and never pull a mask into tension anywhere, otherwise it will spring back after the paint dries and reveal the edge. The rear cockpit is separated from the front one, so mask and spray both parts at the same time: the paint will then have the same shade and texture.
