A masking set for a 1:48 model of the Japanese Kawasaki Ki-61-II Hien fighter. It holds two canopy templates, separately for the outer and for the inner side, and one national insignia mask. The shapes are derived from the kit by RS Model. The film is pre-cut, so the cockpit frames only need to be lifted out and transferred to the part with tweezers.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Kawasaki Ki-61 was an exception among Japanese fighters: instead of the usual radial it carried a liquid-cooled V12 engine, which gave it a slim nose and a silhouette so unusual that Allied pilots at first took it for a German or an Italian machine. The second production version was to receive a stronger powerplant and become the answer to bombing raids from great altitude, but it was the engine that proved to be the weak point of the whole program. Unreliable units could not be delivered in the numbers needed and finished airframes without powerplants piled up at the factory. The solution was unexpectedly simple in the end and led to a radial engine being fitted, which produced one of the best Japanese fighters of the closing stages of the war.
A flat template and a surface curved in two directions will never meet without a compromise. Where the canopy runs into the rounded front, the film ripples and forms small folds that let paint through. Pressure will not help, but heat will: lift the mask, warm it briefly with hot air and lay it back on, and the material then follows the shape by itself. On markedly curved parts it is better to split the template in two with a scalpel and lay the halves on with a slight overlap than to stretch it by force.
