Kyushu J7W Shinden national insignia masks 1:48 - the hinomaru is sprayed with paint, so it has no carrier film and does not silver.
Responsibility details are not available.
A set of die-cut masks for the national insignia of a Shinden model in 1:48 scale. These are not canopy masks: with this set the circular insignia are not applied as decals but sprayed directly with paint through a template.
A decal is always a thin layer of paint carried on a transparent film. That film has an edge, and however thin it may be, on a matte or rougher surface air is trapped under it and the insignia begins to silver around its perimeter. A sprayed insignia has no film, so it lies directly on the surface of the airframe and behaves exactly like the paint around it: equally matte, equally receptive to a wash and to pigment, and indistinguishable even when held against the light. You notice the practical benefit mainly where an insignia runs across a panel line, riveting or the curve of a leading edge, because a decal lifts in such a place and calls for a softener.
Spray the insignia only onto a finished, well-cured top color. Seat the mask and press it down around its perimeter, so that no gap is left anywhere. Lay the paint on in several very thin coats, perpendicular to the surface; a heavy coat creeps under the edge sooner than three weak ones. Lift the mask off shortly after it has dried and repair any small overrun with a brush, while the paint is still fresh.
