Replacement resin detail parts from the Quickboost line by the Czech company Aires. The set replaces the air scoops on the fuselage of the L-29 Delfín trainer aircraft in 1:48-scale kits. This is not an aircraft model; the plastic kit is not included in the package. The parts are fitted into a kit you already own.

Why resin pays off

Small air scoops in injection-molded plastic are usually just shallow indentations or filled-in bumps — the mold cannot produce a deeper, open opening. The resin casting has sharp edges, a thin wall and an open intake, so the scoop really looks like an opening leading into the fuselage. On an aircraft as clean and smooth as the Delfín, a detail like this stands out noticeably.

The real subject

The L-29 Delfín is a Czechoslovak jet trainer and one of the great successes of Czechoslovak aviation industry. It was developed at the turn of the 1950s and 1960s, won the competition for a standard trainer for the Eastern Bloc, and was subsequently produced in the thousands for a wide range of countries. For Czech and Slovak modelers it is a beloved classic — an aircraft on which generations of pilots learned to fly. Its smooth fuselage with a high-mounted T-tail is one of the best-known silhouettes in Czechoslovak aviation history.

Use

• Cut the parts from the casting blocks with a sharp scalpel or a fine saw — never snap them off.
• Level the marks from the blocks by sanding wet and always with respiratory protection.
• Before gluing, wash the parts in warm water with dish soap — this removes residue from the mold release agent, which paint will not hold on.
• Glue with cyanoacrylate (super glue); plastic cement has no effect on resin.
• Spray a primer, then the fuselage color; highlight the edges of the scoops with a darker shade.
