This Plusmodel accessory brings the British 7.7 mm Vickers aircraft machine gun in 1:48 scale. It was a gun that belonged to the basic armament of First World War fighters and held on through the interwar period as well. The set serves to replace simplified kit parts; the aircraft itself is not included.
The Vickers derived from the Maxim design and in its aircraft form was mounted fixed in front of the pilot so that it fired through the propeller disc. Gun synchronizing gear made this possible by timing the shots between the blades. On the aircraft versions the cooling jacket received holes, because the airflow took care of the cooling by itself. The gun was known for its reliability and for the fact that a pilot could deal with it in flight straight from the cockpit.
Paint and finish the gun off the model and only then fit it in place, because it would be hard to reach in a finished cockpit. A dark base coat with the edges lightly picked out brings out the perforated jacket considerably better than a uniform metallic spray. If you are building an aircraft with the gun exposed, allow for the run of the ammunition belt and for the brackets that held the gun to the fuselage.
