A detail accessory in 1:48 scale from the Czech manufacturer Eduard for a plastic kit of the Lockheed F-104A Starfighter fighter. It is not a kit nor a photo-etched fret but a finished colored instrument panel, which on the model replaces the plastic part or the decal in the cockpit. Compared with flat photo-etched metal it has real depth, the instruments stand out and the dials are legibly printed. Fitting it is a matter of a few minutes, and painting falls away. If you want to refine the whole model, broader photo-etched sets and masks exist; this accessory is targeted: one place, the greatest ratio of effect to time.
The F-104 Starfighter is a single-engined supersonic aircraft with a very thin, short trapezoidal wing, a slender fuselage and tail surfaces in the shape of a T. The F-104A version was an early fighter variant intended for the US Air Force. The design was subordinated to speed and rate of climb, and the cramped cockpit with a densely populated instrument panel corresponds to that. In 1:48 scale the panel is clearly visible with the canopy open, and a flat plastic part looks empty on it.
Before gluing, check how much room the panel has in the fuselage and thin the plastic part down by sanding as required. It is glued with a drop of cyanoacrylate glue, and the gel variant will give longer to seat it. Do not clean the color printing with alcohol or thinner and do not overspray it with matte varnish, as it will lose its legibility. The dials will stand out once a dot of clear gloss varnish is laid on. Finish the cockpit walls and the seat, patina included, before you fit the panel. On this type it pays to build the model with the canopy open, as otherwise the work in the cockpit is hidden.
It is an accessory for a kit, not a model in its own right. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
