About product

Instrument panel for a 1:48 Lockheed F-104S Starfighter model

An accessory set from the LööK range, made by the Czech company Eduard. It is not a kit of the aircraft but a finished instrument panel intended to be fitted into the cockpit of a plastic model in 1:48 scale that you have already bought. The panel comes painted and with the dials rendered, so the most demanding painting work of the whole build falls away: the modeler simply separates it, checks the seating and glues it in place of the original plastic part. That is the main reason even builders who otherwise do not use photo-etched metal reach for these sets.

The real subject

The F-104S is a version of the single-seat Starfighter fighter, built under license in Italy. The type is unmistakable for its very short trapezoidal wing with a thin section and a long slender fuselage, which earned it a nickname referring to a missile. The cockpit is cramped and the instrument panel takes up a large part of the field of view in it, so on a model with the canopy open it is one of the first details a viewer notices.

Usage tips

Before gluing, try the panel dry in the cockpit and if necessary adjust the plastic recess, not the part itself. The original plastic instrument panel usually has to be sanded down or removed, so that the new one sits at the right depth. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue applied in a tiny drop with a pin, or with a drop of water-based gloss varnish, which holds well enough and leaves no white bloom. Do not overspray the finished colored surfaces and do not cloud them with matte varnish, as the impression of glass on the dials would be lost.

Who the set is for

  • modelers building the Starfighter in 1:48 scale
  • builders who do not want to paint an instrument panel laboriously
  • anyone who displays a model with the cockpit canopy open
  • less experienced modelers too, because fitting it is a matter of one part

The set is an accessory for a plastic model, not a kit in its own right. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package. Check the match with your model before buying.

FAQ

It is not. It is an accessory for the cockpit of a plastic model in 1:48 scale. The kit has to be obtained separately.

No, it is supplied finished and colored. That is precisely the point of the range it belongs to: to replace the most laborious painting in a cockpit with one glued-in part.

The exact package contents are given on the packaging of the set.

Usually the original plastic instrument panel has to be removed or sanded down, so that the new one sits at the right depth. Try the seating dry.
