The 367th Fighter Group came into being in the middle of 1943 and reached England in the spring of the following year. It changed to twin engine Lightnings shortly before the landing in Normandy and from there springs its reputation: at a time when other units were ticking off kills, this group did the hardest and least rewarding work of low level attack. In July 1944 reequipment with single engine Thunderbolts awaited it, so the period when it flew twin-boom machines barely lasted half a year.
The machines offered belonged to the 392nd Squadron and one of them carried the name Moonlight Cocktail. Personal names and artwork on the noses were common practice with American units and for a modeler they mean the most valuable thing of all: a specific aircraft with a story of its own instead of an anonymous serial number.
The carrier film is thin and wrinkles easily while being lifted out of the water, so let it slide into place on a paper pad instead of pulling it with tweezers. Over riveting and panel lines it pays to use a softener: the motif grows supple after it, settles into the relief and stops bridging over it. The softener is applied with a brush from above and while it dries the decal is not touched; moving it at this stage will tear the artwork. Older sheets have weaker adhesive, and a drop of water with a little decal glue applied to the area beforehand helps.
This is the printed sheet alone with no plastic parts.
