This set from Metallic Details is intended for finishing the outside of a model of the Lockheed TR-1A/B reconnaissance aircraft in 1:48 scale. The word exterior means details on the surface of the airframe, not the interior of the cockpit. The base kit is bought separately; the set only adds to it the areas that injection-molded plastic cannot render in this scale.
The Lockheed TR-1 is a reconnaissance derivative of the famous high-flying U-2R. It came about as a tactical reconnaissance aircraft with a very high ceiling, a glider-like span and a single jet engine. The TR-1A version was single-seat, while the TR-1B had a second cockpit for an instructor and was used for training. At the beginning of the 1990s the machines were redesignated back into the U-2 series. It is precisely the great span and the clean surface of the airframe that make the small exterior details a conspicuous element on a model.
Compared with injection-molded plastic, resin castings have sharper edges and a finer structure, so even small protrusions and transitions stand out on the surface of the model. With resin the procedure is always the same: wash off the mold release agent, cut off the casting blocks, sand, and only then glue. Make the joints with cyanoacrylate glue in small drops; any excess can be removed with an accelerator or sanded away. Primer before painting is a mandatory step with resin, otherwise the paint comes off even during ordinary handling.
