An accessory resin set in 1:48 scale for the airbrakes of the second-generation U-2 reconnaissance aircraft, that is of the U-2R and TR-1A/B versions. It is not a model of the aircraft but a set of replacement parts that make it possible to show the brakes extended and with a realistic wall thickness.
The U-2R is the enlarged second generation of the high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft, with a markedly greater span and a longer fuselage than the original machines of the 1950s. It first flew in 1967. The same design also gave rise to the tactical reconnaissance versions designated TR-1A and the two-seat TR-1B trainer, which were later redesignated back into the U-2 series. The aircraft is built for long endurance flight at great altitude, has a glider-like slender wing and a tandem landing gear. The airbrakes on the sides of the rear fuselage belong among the parts that are often shown extended on models, because they break up the otherwise smooth surface of the fuselage.
First wash the resin parts in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent, so that any residue of mold release agent is removed. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a sharp cutter, and on flat parts take care not to sand the thickness away. Sand the marks wet and with breathing protection. Before gluing them in, check dry that the cut-out in the fuselage matches the shape of the brake; make any adjustment on the plastic, not on the resin. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue. Apply a primer before painting. The inside of the bay and the back of the brake are usually painted differently from the external finish; a very dark aircraft surface pays to spray in thin coats and to bring the shade alive with slight differences of tone, because otherwise the surface looks flat.
The set is an accessory for a build, not a stand-alone model. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
