About product

Armycast 1:48 — masks for Luftwaffe national insignia, late version, part I

A masking set in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker Armycast. The self-adhesive sheets hold machine-cut shapes of the national insignia of the Luftwaffe, the so-called Balkenkreuz, in the late rendering matching the closing stage of the war period. The item is the first part of this variant; the maker split it into several separately sold parts.

The markings

The rendering of the national insignia was simplified in the course of the war. While the early crosses have a solid black center with a broad white border, the late variants are reduced — they are often formed only by an outline, or by separate sections of the border without a solid fill. The practical reason was the speed of spraying and the wish for a less conspicuous marking. It is precisely this simplified form that is characteristic of models from the end of the war, and spraying it through a mask is simpler than piecing together several parts of a decal.

Procedure and application tips

The base has to be dry, smooth and degreased. Transfer the template with tweezers, line it up against the panel lines and press the edges down carefully with a wooden stick — on outline insignia the bands are narrow and easily get paint under them. Spray several very thin coats at right angles to the surface and let them dry in between. Lift the mask off soon after it has dried by pulling back over itself at a sharp angle. A sprayed insignia has no carrier film, so it does not silver, it follows rivets and engraved lines and it can be scuffed, faded and dusted just like the surrounding finish — which comes in especially useful on machines from the end of the war, which are often built heavily worn.

Who the set is for

  • builders of German aircraft of the closing period of the war in 1:48 scale
  • modelers who want to spray the markings instead of using decals
  • those who care about the period-correct variant of the national insignia
  • builders of heavily weathered and worn models

The package holds masking templates only. Paints, varnish and the model are not part of it.

FAQ

It is markedly simplified — it is often formed only by the outline of the cross or by separate sections of the border without a solid fill, unlike the early solid cross with a broad white border.

No. These are masking templates — they are stuck on a painted model, the paint is sprayed over them and then they are lifted off.

The bands are narrow, so press the edges of the mask down carefully and spray at right angles to the surface so that the paint does not creep under.

Yes. A sprayed marking is part of the finish, so it can be scuffed, faded and dusted just like the surrounding paint.
