Armycast 1:48 Luftwaffe Balkenkreuze, middle version — part I is a set of die-cut self-adhesive masking templates for spraying the national insignia of Luftwaffe aircraft in the form used in the middle phase of the war.

A masking set in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker Armycast. The self-adhesive sheets carry machine-cut shapes of the national insignia of the Luftwaffe, the so-called Balkenkreuz, in the middle variant — that is in the form matching the middle phase of the war period. The item is the first part of this variant; the maker split it into several separately sold parts.
The Balkenkreuz was placed on the sides of the fuselage and on the upper and lower wing surfaces. Its rendering changed over time: while the early crosses have a solid black center with a broad white border, in the later variants the white area narrows and the whole insignia is simplified. The middle variant stands between the two extremes, and that is exactly why it suits machines from the middle part of the war period. Choosing the right variant is one of the most conspicuous marks of a model's period accuracy.
The masks go on a dry, smooth and degreased coat of paint. Transfer the template with tweezers, press the edges down with a wooden stick and spray several very thin coats at right angles to the surface; spraying at an angle makes the paint creep under the edge. With a two-color insignia work in layers — the light area first, then the further pieces of the mask are added and the dark center is oversprayed. Lift the mask off soon after it has dried by pulling back over itself at a sharp angle. A sprayed marking has no carrier film, so it does not silver, it follows rivets and engraved lines and it can be scuffed and faded just like the surrounding finish.
The package holds masking templates only. Paints, varnish and the model are not part of it.
