About product

A-7D/E Corsair II 1:48 New Ware masking set, BASIC grade

A set of cut self-adhesive masks intended for painting a model of the A-7 Corsair II attack aircraft in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit and not a spare part: the package holds shaped masks for the areas that must not be sprayed, above all the cockpit glazing. With this maker's sets the BASIC designation marks the smallest of the coverages offered, that is the basic cover; wider grades deal with more areas at once.

Why a mask instead of hand-cut tape

The segmented canopy is the most demanding place on the whole model. Hand-cut strips of tape lift in the curves, the edge of the frame comes out differently every time and paint likes to creep under. A pre-cut mask sits exactly on the shape of the frame, and once it is lifted off the glass is left clean and free of scalpel scratches.

The real subject

The A-7 Corsair II was an American subsonic attack aircraft, shaped from the F-8 Crusader fighter. It appeared in the middle of the 1960s as a carrier of bomb and rocket armament with long range and good navigation accuracy. It saw combat in Vietnam and in its later versions was still in service in the 1990s. The A-7D flew with the US Air Force and the A-7E with the Navy; both were powered by the TF41 jet engine and carried a 20 mm rotary cannon.

Usage tips

Degrease the glazing before applying the mask and press it down with a toothpick or a blunt stick all the way round, so that no gap is left underneath. Spray several light coats at right angles to the edge of the mask, not at an angle under it. Lift the mask off while the paint is only dry to the touch; once it has fully cured there is a risk of pulling the finish away. Keep the rest of the sheet with the unused pieces, as it will serve for small masking elsewhere.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want clean cockpit frames without patient cutting
  • Beginners, for whom a mask makes spraying glazing easier the first time
  • Builders finishing a model in 1:48 scale who want to save time
  • Those who reuse masking material and keep the leftovers of the sheet

The set contains masking parts only. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package. The masks are cut to the shape of a particular kit of this type, so please check that they match your own model before buying.

FAQ

It is not. It is a masking set, an aid for painting a finished or part-built model. The model itself has to be bought separately.

The grade states the coverage of the set. BASIC is the smallest of the versions offered and deals with the basic masking; higher grades cover a larger number of areas.

Best shortly after spraying, when the paint is dry to the touch. Once it has fully cured the finish comes away with the mask more easily.

The precisely shaped pieces usually cannot, as the adhesive holds less well once lifted. The unused remainder of the sheet, however, serves well for general masking.
