Do 335 A Pfeil BASIC 1:48 mask set (New Ware)

The basic form of the mask set in 1:48 scale for the model of the Dornier Do 335 A. The masks are cut from self-adhesive film and serve to let the frames of the glazing be sprayed together with the camouflage, so that they have the same texture and sheen as the surrounding surface.

How a curved canopy is masked

The cockpit of the Do 335 sits on a high spine and the front part of the canopy is curved in two directions at once. A straight strip of tape always ripples on a surface like that, and in a curve it either tears or folds over. A cut mask has a shape adapted in advance to the curvature, adheres without a crease and the width of the frame stays constant along its whole length.

Practical advice

• Let the film settle at room temperature before applying it, as a cold one is stiffer and follows a curve less well.
• On a strongly curved surface, press the part down from the center to the edges, not from the top down.
• If a frame runs over the edge of the canopy, complete it with a narrow strip of ordinary masking tape.
• After spraying, take the mask off before the finish has fully cured; the edge will then stay clean.
• Wipe any adhesive residue off with alcohol on a cotton swab, never with paint thinner.
