1:48 F-14D Tomcat masks - exhaust nozzles is a specialized New Ware masking set aimed purely at painting the exhaust nozzles of the engines on a model in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit and not a general set of masks for the cockpit.

A narrowly focused masking set in 1:48 scale. Unlike the usual sets, which deal with the cockpit glazing, this one is aimed purely at the exhaust nozzles of the engines. The templates are cut to the shape of the parts of the Tamiya 61118 kit and make it possible to spray differentiated shades on the nozzles without trimming tape into circles by hand.
The exhaust nozzle of a jet engine is not a uniform surface. It is made up of overlapping petals and rings, which heat up differently in service - and that is why on a real machine they stay in different shades of metal, from dark scorched to light. It is exactly this transition that makes the nozzles one of the most prominent details on a model of a modern fighter. Masking circular and conical shapes by hand is a thankless job: tape cannot be run straight around a curve, it kinks and the edges come out ragged. A pre-cut mask respects the shape.
Spray the nozzles all over with a base metallic shade first and let them dry thoroughly - metallic paints take longer to reach full hardness than ordinary paints and a fresh surface is easily damaged under a mask. So allow for a longer pause before applying the mask. The pigment in metallic paints settles at the bottom, so always mix the paint thoroughly. Spray in thin coats, add the darker tones gradually and leave them until last. Metallic paints are harder both to overspray and to mask, so it is best to finish the nozzles at the end of the build. Once the masks are off you can even the transitions out with a light dark wash or a fine pigment, but carefully - on a metallic surface every intervention shows more strongly than on matte paint.
