The Phantom II was built in many forms and modelers come back to it again and again. This set from the manufacturer New Ware is cut so as to serve both the combat F-4 and the reconnaissance RF-4. These are self-adhesive masks on a backing film, that is an aid for painting, not a part of a model. The ADVANCED form means a wider extent than the basic grade.
A two-seat canopy has more parts, more frames and more places where a mistake can be made. Masking two separate sections by hand moreover often ends with the front and the rear part not having lines of the same thickness, which is immediately apparent when looking from above. A cut mask rules that difference out. At the same time it allows the frames to be sprayed from the inside as well as the outside, so the cockpit looks right even when seen through the glass.
Mark the clear parts of the canopy in advance so that they do not get mixed up; on a two-seat cockpit it is easy to confuse them. Lay the masks on dry, position them, check and only then press them down. If you are also spraying the interior shade of the cockpit, start with it and apply the outer color only once it has dried. Heavy coats kill the crispness of an edge; better to spray three times thinly than once generously. Once the masks are off, check the glass against the light and remove any prints with a soft dry cloth.
The package holds only the mask set. A kit, paints and glue are not part of it.
