A narrowly focused cut self-adhesive mask for models of the fighters of the Su-27 and Su-30 family in 1:48 scale. It is not a set for the cockpit but an aid for a single, if demanding, task: spraying the exhaust nozzles of the engines. The parts are cut to the shape of the nozzles of a particular kit.
The nozzle of a jet engine consists of a series of narrow movable segments arranged around its circumference. On a model that means dozens of thin strips, which on the real machine differ in shade according to the thermal load. Such a pattern practically cannot be masked by hand, and on a conical surface tape will not hold a straight line either. A cut mask solves the spacing and the shape of the segments at once and gives a result that would take hours with a brush.
Start with a dark base, ideally black or dark gray, so that the shadow between the segments is brought out. Lay the metal shades on thinly; metallic paints have a pigment that settles to the bottom of the bottle, so mix them thoroughly before every use. Metallic paint looks better on a smooth base and is harder to mask, so leave it for the end. By alternating two or three related metal shades you achieve the impression of thermally stressed metal. Lift the mask off carefully, as a metal coat is softer than an ordinary finish.
