About product

Resin refueling probe for a 1:48 McDonnell F-4B Phantom model

A small accessory set from the Czech company Eduard that replaces a part of the refueling equipment on a plastic model in 1:48 scale you have already bought. It is not a kit of the aircraft. The PRINT designation refers to the production of the resin part by printing: slender, long and thin components then come out straight and with a sharp surface, which is a problem with injection-molded plastic, because such parts fill poorly in the mold and warp once removed.

The real subject

The F-4B is an early production version of the twin-engine two-seat carrier-based aircraft from McDonnell. The carrier-based form of the Phantom took on fuel through an extendable device on the right side of the forward fuselage, which connected in flight to the hose of a tanker aircraft. In the extended position it is a conspicuous element of the silhouette, while when retracted it is covered by a fairing flush with the skin. The model can thus be built in either state according to the scene you want to evoke.

Building and painting tips

Wash the part in lukewarm soapy water first to get rid of any print resin residue. Cut the print supports off with a saw or a knife and never snap them, as a thin part would break. Sand wet and protect your airways. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue or a two-part epoxy; plastic cement will not help. Apply a thin primer before painting. Because this is an exposed part at the edge of the fuselage, we recommend fitting it at the end of the build, when you will no longer be turning the model in your hand.

Who the set is for

  • modelers building the carrier-based version of the Phantom in 1:48 scale
  • builders bothered by the thickness and the warp of the plastic part from the box
  • everyone who wants to build the model with the refueling device extended
  • as a small, simple improvement to a prominent part of the silhouette

The set is an accessory for a plastic model, not a kit in its own right. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package. The target kit is not stated here, so check the match with your model beforehand.

FAQ

It replaces the device for taking on fuel in flight that the carrier-based version of the Phantom had on the right side of the forward fuselage.

Long, thin components fill poorly in an injection mold and often warp once removed. A printed resin part comes out straight and with a sharper surface.

Cyanoacrylate glue or a two-part epoxy. Ordinary plastic cement does not dissolve resin, so the joint does not hold.

Ideally at the end of the build, after painting. It sits in an exposed place at the edge of the fuselage and breaks off easily while the model is being handled.
