About product

The F3H-2M Demon landing gear bays in 1:48 scale from Metallic Details

A resin accessory set that replaces the landing gear bays on a model of the Demon carrier fighter in 1:48 scale. The bays belong among the places where the difference between a kit and a detail set shows most: in injection-molded plastic they are shallow and smooth for technical reasons, while in reality they are full of ribs, pipework and cable runs. The set does not replace the kit, it complements it.

The real subject

The McDonnell F3H Demon was a single-engine carrier fighter of the US Navy from the 1950s with a swept wing. The F3H-2M version carried first-generation Sparrow guided missiles, and the F3H-2 series was powered by the Allison J71 engine. As a carrier machine the Demon had a robust landing gear with a reinforced nose leg and bays that are built more honestly on aircraft launched from a catapult than on land-based types. The inside of the bays used to be light in color, so that a fault could be found in it during an inspection, and traces of hydraulic fluid and of service on deck showed on it quickly.

Building and painting tips

Wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent, so that no mold release agent is left on the surface. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw a short distance from the part and sand the surface - do not breathe in the resin dust, sand wet and in a well ventilated room. The original shallow bays in the kit usually have to be sanded or cut out, so always dry fit first and remove the material gradually. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Paint the bays before you close the fuselage and the wing: primer, a light base shade, a dark wash into the corners, highlighted edges and finally fine traces of oil. Hydraulic lines can be added from thin wire if you want to go beyond the casting.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the F3H-2M carrier fighter in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who build the model with the landing gear extended
  • Anyone interested in faithful detail on the underside of a model
  • More experienced builders willing to modify a plastic kit

This is an accessory set, not a model of an airplane. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

As a rule yes. The original shallow bays have to be sanded or cut out. Remove the material gradually and keep dry fitting as you go.

Before the fuselage and the wing are closed. Afterwards you will not reach the inside and the detail would get clogged.

Little. It comes into its own on a model with the landing gear extended and the doors open, where the bays are visible.
