This is not a model of an airplane but an accessory set. The resin cockpit goes into a part-built plastic MiG-15 kit in 1:48 scale in place of the out-of-the-box parts. Aires is among the makers whose castings have crisply defined instrument panels, side consoles with levers and fine textures that injection-molded plastic cannot deliver at this size. The set is intended for modelers who object to an empty and flat interior under an open canopy.
The MiG-15 was a Soviet single-engined fighter with a swept wing that entered service at the turn of the 1940s and 1950s. It was powered by a centrifugal-flow turbojet and its cockpit was simple for its day, with pronounced canopy framing and a densely populated instrument panel. It is precisely these details that are most on show on a model once the canopy is opened.
The set calls for a more experienced hand. First wash the mold release agent off the castings, cut the casting blocks away with a fine-toothed razor saw and sand the surface wet, with respiratory protection. Resin is glued exclusively with cyanoacrylate. When fitting the cockpit, count on having to thin the inner fuselage walls and dry-fit the parts repeatedly before the fuselage halves can be glued together. Painting is easier before installation: a primer, the interior shade, a dark wash in the recesses and a dry brush on the edges. The instrument panels are often completed with photo-etched strips or decals, if the package contains them.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
