A color print of the instrument panel and cockpit details with 3D texture on decal paper. A set cut for a kit from another maker also exists under the same name — this one is adapted to the parts from Eduard, so when choosing make sure which variant you are taking.
The inside of the MiG-21MF is narrow and deep and its character is determined not so much by the instrument panel as by what surrounds it. The seat fills almost the whole width of the cockpit, long consoles with rows of levers run down both sides and above the panel sits a gunsight that covers its upper edge. The instruments are exclusively analog and packed into two or three rows. On this type, then, the result is decided by the details around the panel: the belts on the seat, the frames and the inner walls. It is precisely those that show most in a very detailed plastic cockpit, because the canopy hinges to the side and when it is open the inside is unprotectedly on show.
A photo-etched part will bring sharp edges and relief, but you have to create the colored scales and the texture of the straps yourself. A decal from the box is a flat print without depth. Hand painting dials and belts in 1:48 is the most demanding part of the whole cockpit and the result is hard to repeat. A print on decal paper carries both the color and a three-dimensional structure, so both are done away with. The base has to be smooth, matte and degreased; settle the set with a decal softener and let it dry out thoroughly.
