The set from the Metallic Details brand replaces the plastic wheels from a kit of the Mil Mi-24 or Mi-35M attack helicopter in 1:48 scale with resin castings. It is not a model of the helicopter, but a small accessory that even a modeler without much experience of resin will manage, and which is immediately visible on a finished machine.
Wheels are among the parts that an injection mold struggles with most. The tread pattern tends to be merely suggested, the parting line runs exactly through the center of the tire and cleaning it up usually damages the surrounding detail. A resin casting has none of that, because it is cast in one piece: the hub, the rim and the tread are sharp and the only clean-up is on the casting block away from the visible surface. The model then stands on wheels that look like rubber, not like plastic.
The Mi-24 is a heavy attack helicopter with an armored cockpit and a compartment for troops. The Mi-24V and Mi-24VP versions differ in the armament in the nose. The Mi-35M is a later upgraded variant, which you recognize from the outside by its shortened wings and non-retractable landing gear. This set covers all three, so it suits part-built models in a drawer as well.
First wash the resin parts in lukewarm soapy water. A residue of mold release agent clings to the surface and the paint does not hold under it. Do not snap the casting blocks off, but cut them with a saw or a cutting disc and level the area with a file and fine abrasive paper. Sand resin wet and protect your breathing, because the dust from it is unpleasant. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, because ordinary cement for plastic has no effect on resin. Spray the parts with a primer before painting, which unifies the resin with the plastic of the kit and reveals any imperfections still to be sanded.
The set is an accessory for building a model, not a standalone model. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
