The Mirage 2000-5F No. 43 with the code 2-EJ and the name Vieux Charles from the Cigognes squadron, 2017; a decal sheet in 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The name Vieux Charles is among the most famous in the history of French military aviation. That is what Georges Guynemer, a fighter pilot of the storks escadrille of the First World War, called his aircraft, and his legacy was taken up by the modern EC 1/2 Cigognes fighter unit. In 2017 the name appeared on a Mirage 2000-5F with the number No. 43 and the tactical code 2-EJ.
The Mirage 2000-5F is an upgraded single-seat interceptor with a delta wing, converted from the original 2000C aircraft. It brought a new radar able to track several targets at once, a reworked cockpit with large displays and the firing of medium-range missiles. The French Air Force operated a limited number of them and concentrated them at a single air base, which makes every individual airframe an interesting subject.
A two-character code such as 2-EJ reads as the squadron number and a letter address for the particular aircraft within the unit; the number No. 43, by contrast, is the sequence number of the airframe. The two designations appear in different places on a model, so compare their placement against period photographs before gluing.
Collectors of French aircraft tend to have several forms of the delta-winged fighter on the shelf, and the anniversary airframes make the natural high point of such a row.
