Mitsubishi A6M5a/b/c landing gear bay masks in 1:48 scale from Dead Design replace cotton wool and putty with a die-cut template that lines up with the edge of the opening.
Responsibility details are not available.
A Dead Design masking set for the landing gear bays of the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M5 carrier fighter in the a, b and c subvariants. The templates are laid over the openings of the bays so that their painted inside is not fouled by the top coat of the airframe.
Improvised plugs have three weaknesses. They do not hold their shape, so they shift during spraying; they leave an indefinite transition at the edge of the opening, which then shows on the model; and cotton wool sheds fibers on top of that, which get baked into fresh paint. Masking putty in turn sometimes leaves a residue in the engraved detail around the bay. A die-cut template does none of that: it lines up with the edge of the opening and the transition is therefore crisp, as if there were no mask there at all.
According to the name the set is intended for the A6M5a, A6M5b and A6M5c subvariants. They differed from each other mainly in armament and additional equipment, while the arrangement of the landing gear stayed the same, which is why they can be covered by one set of masks. For the builder that means the set will be of use whichever subvariant comes out of the box.
Paint and weather the interior of the bay first, let it dry properly and only then fit the mask. Press the edge down all the way around with a toothpick. Spray the top color perpendicular to the surface and in thin coats; an angled application flows into the opening. Remove the template once the camouflage has dried, ideally before you glue the landing gear legs on.
